Our 30 year history of training quality pilots for the aviation industry proceeds us and our Chief Flight Instructor, Seymour "Sluggy" Lugg who has piloted over 100 different aircraft, most likely qualifies as the pilot with the most Piper Cherokee 140 hours in the country if not the world!
Founded in 1972, Airborne Aviation has gained recognition as one of the finest educational training facilities throughout South Africa. Our founder & Chief Flight Instructor Mr. Seymour “Sluggy” Lugg is a retired Airline Captain and grade II instructor experienced in flying over 100 aircraft types ranging from the Tiger Moth to some of the largest airliners. His aviation background and leadership skills contributed to the continual success of our school. Airborne Aviation is certified under the Civil Aviation Authority as an approved flight school. We are based at Benoni Brakpan Airfield, a municipal airfield located 7nm (18km) south of Johannesburg International Airport, in the Gauteng region of South Africa. The five instructors at Airborne Aviation are carefully screened to ensure a staff of fully licensed, experienced professionals. They are continually evaluated to maintain high levels of teaching effectiveness, with closer attention to the students' individual learning and motivational needs. All are qualified to give both flight and ground instruction. The flight-training center has been in the family for the past 30 years and continues to produce successful commercial pilots. In conjunction with the flight school the owners of Airborne Aviation also operates a charter company, Three Diamonds Air Charter. The training center provides qualified pilots with specific requirements needed for our charter company & the Airborne / Three Diamonds culture is instilled into their airmanship and they are known for reliability and experienced flying in and out of African airfields. Our staff prides itself on its service and punctuality, which enables us to provide an exclusive & professional service to our students & clients. Three Diamonds have six full time pilots (all who received their wings at Airborne) who are highly qualified and have vast experience in flying in and out of Africa. All pilots hold a commercial pilots license with a minimum of 800 hours and have been through an intense bush pilot training course with our Chief Pilot Sam Berriman. At Airborne Flight School we have a “Wall of Fame” with photographs of our ex-student who received their CPL & ATP licenses at our school who are currently flying for some of the major airlines. These include Airlink, Mango, 1Time, SAA, NatureLink, SA Express, Air Aquarius, Stars Away & various smaller charter companies, which once again emphasizes our dedication to excellence & the training of quality pilots for the aviation industry.
