Airline Transport Pilot Licence- Helicopter (ATPL-H)

In order to be issued with a Airline Transport Pilot Licence in South Africa, the following minimum requirements need to be met:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- An applicant for an ATPL-H must be at least 21 years of age
- The applicant must have a valid class I medical certificate
- The applicant must produce evidence that he/she has/has had within the previous 60 months one of the following: a valid South African Private Pilot Licence (Helicopter); or, a valid pilot licence issued by a contracting state; or, a valid Student Pilot Licence where the student has successfully completed an approved integrated training program; or, a valid instrument rating
- Have within the previous 60 months completed a multi-crew cooperation course
- Have successfully completed all training at a CAA approved flight training institution
- Have passed the theoretical knowledge examinations. The exams are as follows: 1) Aviation Meteorology, 2) Flight Planning and Performance, 3) Radio Aids and Communication, 4) General Navigation, 5) Instruments and Electronics, 6) Helicopter Technical and General
- An applicant for an ATPL-H must have a minimum of 1500 hours flight time of which:
- 250 hours must be as pilot in command, of which a maximum of 70 hours may be as pilot in command under supervision
- 200 hours of cross country flight time, of which up to 100 hours may be as pilot in command under supervision
- 30 hours of instrument instruction time, of which 10 hours may be accumulated in an approved helicopter simulation device; if the applicant is not already the holder of an instrument rating, these 10 hours have to be accumulated in the 6 months immediately preceding his/her application for an ATPL
- 50 hours flight time as pilot in command or co-pilot at night
PRIVILEGES OF AN AIRLINE TRANSPORT PILOT LICENCE- HELICOPTER
- The holder of a valid ATPL-H may exercise all the privileges of a PPL-H or CPL-H pilot
- The holder may act as pilot in command in any commercial air transport operation
- An ATPL-H is valid for a period of 10 years provided that the relevant annual fees are paid
- The holder of an ATPL-H has to undergo a revalidation check every 12 months
